All of the image sensor specs are exactly identical to the prosumer camera D7100 except for the image processor which is an Expeed 4, the best that Nikon currently offers, so if you're worried about not getting a great sensor, this is definitely top notch (for mid-range cameras at least). I bought this camera a few months ago and all I can say about it are positive things. It's well priced and capable of professional results if you know what you're doing and you take the time to learn the art of photography. There isn't anything I don't like about the camera. The D5300 is a lot of camera and has great capabilities. There are lots of little extras at a very reasonable price. The camera has the newest processor which, among other things, helps maintain image quality at higher ISO settings. Again, the D5300 seems to have the best of both worlds it can grow with the photographer and be usable from beginner to a more advanced user. I considered getting the D3200, but that camera seems a bit too basic and, in my opinion, would not let the photographer/owner transition to more serious photography. Of course the image quality you can get with digital cameras these days is much better than what you were able to get with 35mm film cameras many years ago - I've used both film and digital cameras.Īlthough I have large hands, I can still handle the D5300 without any problems. Anything from ISO 100 to 1200 is amazing. At ISO 6400 the pictures aren't bad, but I'd avoid 6400 unless you really can't get the picture any other way. At ISO 3200 the noise isn't bad, but for me it starts to become visible - most people would be fine with ISO 3200. I would have no concerns shooting at ISO 1600 or lower. The viewfinder is large and great for viewing images in the camera or for Live View shooting. I'm sure Nikon, and other camera makers, will start using this material in the future instead of the more common plastic. The body is made of some new type of polycarbonate material that is light, but strong. The 24 megapixel image quality is excellent. It's the only Nikon DSLR (if you don't count the older 51 models) with a swivel screen, which comes in handy for shooting above crowds and for shooting low level with the camera down on the floor. It can be used in AUTO mode and, when you're ready, can be used in the more professional P, S, A, and M mode. The camera is perfect for the serious beginner. We got the camera with the 18-140mm lens. We wanted to get something for my wife that would yield great image quality, but would be light in weight and easy to use. I own a Nikon D800 and have been a professional photographer for many years. I just bought this camera for my wife and we're very happy with it.
